BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT & INTERVENTION
Behaviour management strategies are fundamental to have when teaching a class.
The classroom environment needs to be efficient in order for discovery and learning to occur.
I feel that it is important that students are aware of what is expected of them in terms of appropriate behaviour.
Token System
The token system is a tool I use in class for positive reinforcements. Students earn tokens for having good behavior, working on task, respecting their classmates and teachers, as well as acts of kindness. Each student has a container with his or her name on it on their desk. At the end of the week, students who have enough tokens get to choose an item of their choice from a treasure box. I feel it is important to establish an atmosphere where students are encouraged and rewarded for doing their best. This type of reinforcement allows students to understand the difference between positive behavior verus negative behavior. It also promotes student's learning and social development, as student's are able to reflect on their own behavior and how it contributes to the overall environment of the classroom.

Talking Critters
Introducing the "Talking Critters," a positive reinforcement for all types of talkers! This is a great tool to use in the classroom for getting students to participate in class. At the beginning of a lesson, I circulate the room and pass out a critter to each student. Instead of having students call out an answer when it is not their turn, this tool reinforces them to raise their hands and use the talking critter to communicate. The Talking Critters serve as a great tool that reinforces positive behavior. It also teaches students to wait their turn while respecting their peers when there is a class discussion.

60 second fix
I am a proponent of Dr. Reggie Melrose refers to as the "60 Second Fix." Prior to beginning a lesson, I have incorporated this method which allows students to relieve their stress through a 60 second relaxation. This has worked wonderfully in the classroom when transitioning between lessons.
I feel that it is important to show students the proper tools to help them relieve stress.
Intervention
There have been a few approaches that I have used so far during my Fe3 that have allowed me to gain greater control over managing the classroom. (Granted, not every strategy has worked!) I was inspired by Alfie Kohn's take on discipline and redirecting students unwanted behaviour to something more purposeful task. His attitude is that the classroom should revolve around the students. This strategy of redirecting undesired behavior allows the student to take action in his/her own learning. Giving students the opportunity to choose can make them feel responsbile and independent.
"School is more than intellectual development; it is about learning to become a responsbile, caring person who can make good choices and solve problems effectively." - Alfie Kohn
