The Best Part of Me

What the lesson was about:

-Students were introduced to the book, "The Best Part of Me" by Wendy Ewald. The aim of this ERC lesson was to help students' build a positive self-image of their bodies and abilities.

-Students got the opportunity to reflect on the "best" part of them by writing a own poem.

What worked well in the lesson:

- This lesson was well received by the students in Grade 2. They were interested in the images shown. One student had asked me why the photographs that were taken in black and white. I explained to the student that perhaps the artist chose to photograph in black and white because she wanted it to be timeless.

-Students enjoyed writing their own poem. They were very excited to get their picture taken in black and white.

What did I learn/ What I would change?

- I found that some of the students had a hard time choosing the best part of them. I would have liked to put more emphasis on what our bodies do in order to function. I could have gone through different body parts to showcase the importance, which would have given the students who were having trouble more of an idea.

- Not many of the students were familiar with black and white photography. I could have brought in black and white photographs and colour photographs to illustrate to students the contrast between the two.

In this ERC lesson, I've developed the Professional Competencies 1, 2, and 8.
