ELA Lesson: Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!
What the lesson was about:
- After reading the book, "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!" by Mo Willems, students were able to make text-to-self connections. Students got the opportunity to imagine the story in their eyes.
-Students were able to state their opinion and give reasons as to why or why not the pigeon should drive the bus.
- We used the SmartBoard as a tool to conduct the survey. Students were excited to move their pigeon into the YES or NO category and share their reasoning with the rest of the class.
-Students got the opportunity to write their thoughts onto paper and draw out an illustration.
*Below is an image from the SmartBoard displaying the votes.

What worked well in the lesson:
-Students absolutely loved the story of "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus." They laughed and had great ideas to contribute to the class discussion throughout the reading.
- The class was very creative at illustrating their ideas into an illustration.
What did I learn/ What I would change?
- The class that I was teaching is still developing their writing skills.
I would have broken this activity into two classes; one class would have been dedicated to writing. The other class would be dedicated to illustrating.
- A word bank could have benefitted some of the students who were struggling to write. I think it would have also pushed other students to write more than one stentence.
In this ELA lesson, I've developed the Professional Competencies 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8.
