ERC Lesson: Deconstructing Gender Stereotypes

What the lesson was about:
-As a class we discussed stereotypes that surround gender.
-Students got the opportunity to analyze two advertisements that directly/indirectly associate gender with stereotypes. -Students worked in groups and created a mind map that visually displayed all the preconceived notions surrounding gender stereotypes.
-The class was introduced to the artist, JeongMee Yoon.
- By the end of the lesson, students were able to have a better idea as to how they can deconstruct gender stereotypes.
What Worked Well during the lesson:
-Students worked collaboratively on the mind map. It was nice to observe the conversations that students were having as they created the map.
- Students wrote a reflection on gender stereotypes at the end of the lesson.I found this was a good way for students to voice their opinion in relation to the topic.
What did I learn?/ What I would change:
- I think the lesson went well overall. However, if I had to re-do the lesson, I think I would have given students the opportunity to research activists to further showcase how times are changing.
-I could have also given them examples of feminists.
- I found that by having students create a mind map allowed them to work collaboratively towards a common goal.
In this ERC lesson, I've developed Professional Competencies 1,2,4, and 8.
